All You Need To Know About CBD

CBD – or cannabidiol – is a chemical compound extracted from the cannabis sativa plant, better known as hemp.

Unlike its cousin marijuana, known for its psychoactive effects, hemp contains very little THC, the compound which produces the “high” that the plant is known for.

Instead, it has a much higher percentage of the CBD compound, which is now becoming known for its amazing and natural healing benefits.

With laws regulating hemp production around the world gradually relaxing, and attitudes to this once-stigmatised plant shifting, many people – and their pets – are turning to CBD for its many health benefits, and as an alternative to pharmaceutical medicines.

But what makes hemp the miracle plant that people claim it to be? Is it really safe for mammals of all ages? And – most of all – can it help you?

All mammals have an endocannabinoid system (ECS) – a little-known system of the body that was only discovered in the early 1990s, but that is thought to play roles in the regulation of sleep, mood, appetite, memory, and fertility and reproduction, among others.

This system produces endocannabinoids, which are similar to the cannabinoids found in CBD products, but are produced inside your body.

Cannabinoid receptors are found in every cell in your body, meaning that both endocannabinoids and cannabinoids can bind to them.

While scientists are still unsure how CBD interacts with the ECS, growing evidence indicates that it can be used to treat wide range of conditions, including chronic pain and inflammation, epilepsy, mental health issues, heart disease, and possibly even cancer.

Regardless of how it works, it appears that supplementing with CBD helps the body to maintain homeostasis, or a steady and balanced internal state that promotes optimal health.

The fact that our bodies naturally produce endocannabinoids and have cannabinoid receptors in the cells means that CBD can be safely administered to mammals of all ages – from your baby to your granny, and even your pets!

The most extensive CBD research has been carried out on its effectiveness in treating seizure disorders, such as epilepsy, in children.

With hemp being a restricted plant until now, little investigation has taken place regarding CBD’s effectiveness in treating other illnesses, and more extensive research is needed.

Similarly, although little evidence exists that demonstrates the benefits of treating animals with CBD, early indications show that it can also help treat seizures in pets.

It may potentially also help animals suffering from skin disorders, osteoarthritis, and even pets with behavioural issues such as nervousness or anxiety.

However, with CBD still being a relatively unregulated market, it’s important to choose your products wisely in order to make sure they do not contain potentially toxic or harmful ingredients.

So, what should you look for in a CBD brand?

First of all, you should look for a product which is organic and GMO-free, to ensure quality and purity.

Secondly, you want your CBD oil to have as few ingredients as possible, and ideally just two: the CBD itself, and a pure, organic carrier oil like hemp or coconut oil.

It’s also important that CBD brands provide lab test results for every batch of oil they produce, since it’s easy for mould and other contaminants to be present in CBD that has not been produced under controlled conditions.
