More and more people are coming around to the benefits of CBD, whether they’re taking it in the form of an oil, gummy sweets or in other food products like honey. It is said to help people deal with anxiety, as well as other health conditions.
But have you ever considered giving your dog CBD? If not, you may find that it could also help your furry companion.
A recent article for Refinery29 explored the CBD options for dogs, as well as looking at what it could help with.
Dr Francisco Di Polo, a vet based in New York City in the US, told the publication that there’s growing evidence to suggest that CBD could be useful for “management of painful conditions, anxiety-related issues and seizures” in dogs.
Dogs, just like people and all other mammals, have an endocannabinoid system, which is what CBD stimulates. The endocannabinoid system is important in maintaining a normal and healthy state of being. Therefore, CBD could be useful if there are imbalances that need to be corrected.
If you’re not sure whether CBD could be right for your pup, it’s best to discuss including it in your dog’s diet with your vet.
However, there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that the likes of dog CBD treats can be used to help manage anxiety in dogs and reduce the distress they suffer as a result.
For example, a post for the Washingtonian highlighted the experiences of Sandy Guillermo and her basset hound-mix Bailey, who has a nervous disposition.
Sandy told the news provider that her vet initially prescribed Trazodone, a prescription sedative, to help control Bailey’s nervous shedding and shaking. However, she said “you could see that she was high”.
Instead, Sandy turned to CBD and told the publication that after a year of feeding Bailey a daily CBD chewable along with multivitamins and turmeric tablets, she has “mellowed out dramatically”.
Alex, who owns a corgi called Navy who suffered from severe separation anxiety, also found that CBD made a big difference to her dog’s temperament. She now gives Navy CBD treats before leaving her alone, especially in a new place, and knows that her dog will relax and go to sleep, rather than barking and scratching at the walls like she used to.
As the Refinery29 article noted, it’s not only CBD treats that can help your dog. You can also give them CBD using a CBD-infused oil, which is placed under the tongue, or a CBD-infused topical cream.
While Dr Di Polo said that the oil under the tongue will bring the quickest effect, he acknowledged that it can be difficult to give some dogs CBD in this way and that it can also be challenging to ensure they get the correct dose.
Many owners like the ease with which their dogs will take CBD treats, and know that by using this method they’re giving a steady dose of CBD to their pooch each time.
Dr Di Polo noted that, while the research into the efficacy of CBD for treating certain conditions in dogs is still in its early stages, that it does appear to be promising. He stressed the importance of including your vet in any conversation about whether to administer CBD to your pet, however.
