CBD has taken the wellness market by storm over the last few years, appearing in many products. The favourite among consumers has become CBD oil, who are looking to take advantage of the potential benefits of the cannabis plant.
But another cannabis product that has claimed a stake in the market for many years is hemp oil. While both are trying to shake the negative connotations of the stigma of cannabis, they do have some differences, which we have a look at here.
What Plant Does CBD Oil and Hemp Oil Come From?
CBD and hemp oils are quite similar in many ways, and although they have different names, they are largely derived from the same plant – hemp. Hemp is the name given to Cannabis Sativa plants that have low concentrations of THC, the psychoactive compound that gets you ‘high’.
In the UK, cannabis plants must not exceed a THC concentration of 0.2 per cent to be classed as hemp and to be grown legally.
This THC limit varies from country to country throughout Europe and the rest of the world. In the USA, the limit is set at 0.3 per cent, and in Switzerland, the limit is much higher at 1 per cent of THC.
Even though both CBD and hemp oils come from the same plant, the products contain significantly different levels of the cannabinoid that consumers want – CBD. This is due to the part of the plant that is used during production.
How can the part of the plant influence the end product?
CBD or cannabidiol is one of the most prevalent cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, but there are varying concentrations in different parts of the plant. The leaves and flowers contain the highest amounts of cannabinoids, which makes them extremely valuable in the extraction of CBD oil.
However, the seeds of the hemp plant contain very little or no CBD, but these seeds still contain many other useful compounds, and they are reserved for the production of hemp, or hemp seed oil.
While hemp oil doesn’t contain the same concentrations of CBD, it still has some benefits that are typically associated with the hemp plant. Also, the seed oil makes an ideal carrier oil for CBD extracts from other parts of the plant.
CBD Extracts in the UK
CBD may offer the opportunity for increased revenue for hemp farmers, the current UK legislation makes it increasingly difficult to take advantage of this. The current UK law states that hemp farmers are not permitted to harvest the flowers and leaves of the plant, where the concentrations of cannabinoids are at its highest.
This means that the majority of CBD oils for sale in the UK are imported from Europe, and as far away as China and the USA.
However, the rest of the plant can be used in the manufacture of many other products, such as construction materials, bioplastics, and clothing.
